Hello, Dumelang —that is hello in Setswana, the native language of Botswana! Thanks for stopping by. My name is Mabedi, and I am here to take your taste buds on a culinary journey of Botswana cuisine.
Don’t feel bad if you don’t know where Botswana is. It is a very small country in Southern Africa. But I would feel bad for you if you have never tasted authentic Tswana food.
Born and raised in Botswana Saturday mornings included waking up to make tea for my and traditional sorghum porridge for my grand-parents. Having lived in a village for years, I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my grandmother making delicious traditional Tswana food (Tswana is the term used to describe things, customs, traditions and anything related to Botswana) However, that all changed two years ago when at age 20, I made the brave decision to move to America to attend college. Little did I know that not only would I be leaving my friends and family behind, but that yummy tripe that my mum used to make and ALL my favorite blend of spice (nothing beats the taste of Robertsons Spices, especially their Steak and Chops blend!).
What is more frustrating than craving a particular traditional food? Knowing that there is no place to find it. My coping mechanism? Find the closest thing to that in the grocery store and put a Tswana twist to it because, let’s face it, getting food shipped from Botswana is a luxury that a BROKE college student like me can never afford.
This blog is for all you foodies who crave Setswana food or will eventually crave from trying out some of my quick and easy recipes. Now, go ahead and grab those kitchen utensils and follow me as I embark on this unique food journey with you!
